Reining in America's Spending Addiction: A Roadmap to Fiscal Responsibility and Sustainable Growth

Living Wage

  1. Implement Employer Penalties/Taxes: One proposed legislative solution is the "Stop Bad Employers by Zeroing Out Subsidies", which would impose a tax on large corporations equivalent to 100% of the government benefits (such as food stamps or Medicaid) their full-time employees receive. This creates a financial incentive for companies to raise wages to a level that makes public assistance unnecessary for their workers.

  2. Strengthen Worker Bargaining Power: Promoting policies that protect and strengthen workers' rights to organize and bargain collectively can enable employees to negotiate for better pay, benefits, and working conditions without relying on government intervention for every standard.

  3. Increase Transparency and Accountability: Requiring large corporations to disclose the percentage of their workforce on government assistance could create public pressure for improved pay and benefits.

Agriculture and Kentucky Farmers

  1. Streamline Application Processes: Leverage digital technologies, reduce paperwork, and optimize internal procedures to simplify the process for small farmers to access government support programs, at minimal cost to the government.

  2. Facilitate Land Access: Collaborate with local landowners and organizations to create affordable leasing programs and incentivize the use of underutilized land for agriculture, promoting growth in the farming sector without significant government funding.

  3. Support Local Markets: Connect farmers with existing programs and local organizations to improve their marketing and sales strategies, promoting direct-to-consumer sales and investments in local food infrastructure at low or no cost to the government.

  4. Provide Education and Resources: Partner with universities, non-profit organizations, and industry groups to offer training and resources for farmers, enabling them to make informed decisions and adopt sustainable practices, with little or no cost to the government.

 Universal Citizen Health Care

  1. Develop a comprehensive plan: Design a single-payer healthcare system that covers essential medical services, such as preventive care, hospitalization, prescription drugs, and long-term care, with clear eligibility criteria and benefits.

  2. Enact supporting legislation: Pass legislation that establishes the healthcare system, outlines its funding mechanisms, and addresses any necessary changes to existing healthcare laws and regulations.

  3. Eliminate the Middle Man: Create a federal agency responsible for administering the healthcare system, processing claims, and disbursing payments to healthcare providers.

  4. Phase-in implementation: Gradually roll out the healthcare system, allowing individuals to transition from their current insurance plans and providing time for healthcare providers to adjust to the new system. By following these steps, the US can work towards establishing a universal healthcare system that provides accessible and affordable care for all citizens.

National Defense

  1. Prioritize strategic spending: Evaluate current defense spending and prioritize programs that are most essential for maintaining a strong and effective military.

  2. Modernize technology and equipment: Invest in research and development to maintain a technological edge, and upgrade equipment to ensure the military is well-prepared to face modern threats.

  3. Improve efficiency and reduce waste: Streamline processes, eliminate redundancies, and increase oversight to reduce waste and ensure that defense resources are used efficiently.

  4. Foster international cooperation: Work closely with allies and partners to share resources, intelligence, and coordinate defense strategies, reducing the burden on the US military. By focusing on strategic spending, modernization, efficiency, and international cooperation, the US can maintain a strong and effective national defense while minimizing unnecessary costs and waste.

Veterans

  1. Enhance awareness and education: Increase awareness of available VA benefits, and provide comprehensive information about these benefits to service members before they leave the military.

  2. Reduce wait times: Implement measures to decrease wait times for appointments with VA healthcare providers and for processing benefit applications, making it easier for veterans to access the care they need.

  3. Expand mental health resources: Provide comprehensive mental health services and support for veterans, including those who have experienced emotional trauma during their military service.

  4. Offer housing and employment assistance: Help veterans transition to civilian life by providing resources for housing and job placement, as well as education opportunities to acquire new skills. By addressing these key areas, the US government can better fulfill its commitment to care for military veterans and ensure that they receive the support they deserve.

Immigration

  1. Reform the current system: Streamline the immigration process by reducing bureaucratic red tape, simplifying application procedures, and providing clear guidelines for applicants.

  2. Create a path to citizenship: Establish a fair and accessible process for undocumented immigrants who meet certain criteria to gain legal status and, eventually, citizenship.

  3. Increase legal immigration opportunities: Expand visa programs for skilled workers, students, and family members of US citizens, enabling more people to enter the country legally.

  4. Strengthen border security: Enhance border security measures while ensuring that human rights are protected, and asylum seekers are given due process. By implementing these steps, the US can work towards a more equitable and efficient immigration system that respects the rights of immigrants, supports the needs of the economy, and maintains national security.

Campaign Finance Reform

  1. Strengthening coordination rules: Make it more difficult for super PACs to coordinate with candidates and political parties, limiting their ability to act as extensions of campaigns.

  2. Requiring disclosure of donors: Ensure that super PACs are transparent about their donors, so voters can see who is funding their activities and judge the motivations behind their spending.

  3. Imposing contribution limits: Consider placing limits on the amount that individuals or organizations can donate to super PACs, thereby reducing the potential for a small number of donors to wield excessive influence.

  4. Public financing: Encourage a shift towards public financing systems for political campaigns, which can level the playing field and reduce the dependence on large donors, including super PACs.. While it may not be possible to completely eradicate super PACs, these steps could help mitigate their influence and create a fairer electoral system.

Drug Epidemic

  1. Increase funding for prevention: Allocate more resources to drug prevention programs that focus on education, community support, and early intervention to reduce substance abuse before it begins.

  2. Expand access to treatment: Increase funding for evidence-based treatment programs, including medication-assisted treatment, behavioral therapies, and harm reduction services, to help those struggling with addiction.

  3. Decriminalize drug addiction: Treat drug addiction as a public health issue rather than a criminal one, focusing on rehabilitation instead of incarceration.

  4. Target the supply chain: Strengthen law enforcement efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks and reduce the availability of illicit drugs, while also regulating the prescription of opioids and other potentially addictive medications.

Education

  1. Revise federal education policies: Reevaluate and modify federal policies, such as No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top, to give states and local school districts more autonomy in decision-making and implementation.

  2. Reduce federal funding dependence: Restructure funding mechanisms to reduce the dependence of local school districts on federal grants, which often come with strict guidelines and requirements.

  3. Encourage local innovation: Foster an environment where states and local districts can experiment with new educational approaches that best fit the needs of their students and communities.

  4. Increase community involvement: Strengthen the role of parents, educators, and local stakeholders in shaping education policies, fostering greater collaboration and accountability at the local level.

Jobs and Economy

  1. Raise the minimum wage: Increase the federal minimum wage to a level that reflects the cost of living in different regions, and index it to inflation to ensure it keeps pace with rising costs.

  2. Strengthen worker protections: Enforce existing labor laws, such as overtime pay and worker safety regulations, and enact new policies to protect workers from exploitation and wage theft.

  3. Expand access to benefits: Ensure that workers have access to benefits, such as healthcare, paid sick leave, and retirement savings plans, to improve their financial security.

  4. Provide education and training: Invest in job training programs, apprenticeships, and educational opportunities to help workers acquire the skills needed for higher-paying jobs. By implementing these steps, the US can create a more equitable economy where all workers have the opportunity to earn a living wage and achieve financial stability.
